UPS™ Dangerous Goods (DG) USA Domestic Shipping (DSX)

Directions on how to ship general dangerous goods through the DSX application with CFR49 and IATA guidelines

  1. Log in to your DesktopShipper user account through the DSX application.


  2. Input your Order ID in the upper left hand box and click on the magnifying glass. This should populate all relevant fields on the DSX order summary interface. If anything needs to be updated, edit all relevant fields and press the $Rate button.


  3. Press the DG button to enter the Manage Dangerous Goods interface.


  4. Press the Add button on the Manage Dangerous Goods interface to enter the Chemical Records interface.


  5. On the Chemical Records interface, type in the corresponding 4 digit UN number pertaining to your dangerous goods in the Id Number text box and press the UPS™ button once. Please see below chemical table links for UN number references:

    49CFR - Applicable for ground and air shipments within the US and shipments from the US to Canada. (chemical table for 49CRF here.)

    IATA - Applicable for air shipments within the US. (chemical table for IATA here.)

    ADR - The European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road is known as ADR. Countries that have signed the ADR agreement are required to comply with the regulations for transporting dangerous goods on the ground in Europe. UPS operates in accordance with the provisions of section 1.1.3.6. (chemical table for ADR here.)



  6. On the Chemical Detail interface, select the title relevant to your dangerous goods. Note that if there are duplicate titles, each title represents a different combination of Regulation Set, Chemical Type, Packaging Group Type, and Transport Type


  7. This should open the options below. Regulation Set and Chemical Type should be set to either 49CFR or IATA. For reference, 49CFR is only applicable for ground and air shipments within the US and shipments from the US to Canada. IATA is only applicable for air shipments within the US. Press the corresponding Select button.



  8. On the Package Quantity Limits interface, click the on relevant transportation for your DG.



  9. Note that Quantity, Unit of Measure, and Packaging Instruction Code are pre-populated with the current requirements. The value pre-populated in the Quantity field indicates the maximum quantity for the DG. Without changing any values, press the Select button.


  10. This should direct you back to the Chemical Records interface.  Input the following in the corresponding text fields:

    Technical Name- Appropriate name of DG shown on the chemical tables
    DOT Special Permit - Department of Transportation Special Permit
    Regulated Level - See here for reference.
    Quantity - Quantity of DG you have
    Quantity Unit of Measure - Unit of measure shown in step 8.
    Packaging Type - Appropriate packaging material for your DG.
    Hazard Label - Description of your DG. (None/Toxic/Poison/Dangerous When Wet)

    Press on the Add button on the top right hand corner once all relevant fields in the Dangerous Goods Info interface is completed. 


  11. This should lead to the Manage Dangerous Goods interface. Click on the line of details to open up fields that need to be filled.

  12. On the Manage Dangerous Goods interface, ensure that all pertinent fields on the next line are filled in. Once finished, press the Close button on the bottom right hand corner. This should direct you back to the order summary.


  13. Press the Other Services button.


  14. Click on the Dangerous Good to mark it on the list and press on the Add Service button. This will ensure that the appropriate DG pricing is applied to the order summary.
  15. Check that the Dangerous Good pricing has been applied in the Special Services and ship once all the relevant text fields are accurate. If you do not see an update in the Shipment Cost Summary or under the Special Services, press the $Rate button.

Packaging Group Type - Packing Groups I, II and III indicate the degree of danger presented by the material is either great, medium or minor, respectively. If more than one packing group is indicated for an entry, the packing group for the hazardous material is determined using the criteria for assignment of packing groups specified in subpart D of part 173.
